About the Breed
The original purpose of Scottish Deerhound dog breed was to hunt and bring down the Scottish roe deer, a magnificent beast twice or more their size.
Deerhounds are laid-back, home-loving companions. Their gentle manners make them indifferent watchdogs but trustworthy childhood friends. These are giant galloping hounds, immensely strong and
fast, who require a secure area to stretch their long legs and indulge their instinct for pursuit.
The Scottish Deerhound possesses the general body formation that is found in the Greyhound, though they are larger in size, heavier in bone and rough coated. Their build suggests the combination of speed, power and endurance necessary to bring down a stag, but their general bearing is one of gentle dignity.
